Afraid of Whales
February 4, 2011
It’s a wordle prompt this week! I genuinely thought I wasn’t going to make it but I scraped in at the last second. I didn’t use all the words. If I had, it would have been a “killer” poem entitled: Stab! Stab! Stab! Instead, it’s a poem about a friend who is moving out of home. She had a dream where her boat was sinking, but she didn’t want to be in the water because she was scared of the whales. Once I stopped laughing at her whale phobia, I realised it fit nicely with her current situation.

Don’t stop feeding me strange dreams, they’re great inspiration!

A yummy one, made me laugh as well as tremble at the fear of whales.

If they had big sharp teeth I might be convinced to be afraid… :)

There’s such tenderness here – like the speaker is soothing a child. Very nice.

Whales are magnificent creatures.

Ah, now this is a pleasure.
(but I’d still like to read “Stab, Stab, Stab”)

…and I’d still like to write it :) One day…

Very effective – the sustained metaphor carries the words really well.

Thanks Christopher. I haven’t had a chance to read many of the others yet but I’m about to, and am especially looking forward to it now!

While I too would like to read “Stab Stab Stab”, you’re right that the Wordle lent itself to violence this time… the poem was much cleaner from the selective trimming of words. Well done. :)

Thanks Joseph! I think that’s why it took me so long to write it; I wanted to do something different but my mood coincided too strongly with the more obvious theme :)

I am intrigued by the dreams we have when we are going through big changes – the metaphors our subconscious comes up with. I think you did a beautiful job expressing the core message. I especially like the line “with glittering voices spread across/ a soul of immense depth.”

Thanks Kelly! Dreams are fascinating creatures, I can’t wait for technology to advance far enough so we can record them!

Joanne, sorry I am late responding here. Time got away; but I visited your poem today and found it intriguing and I like what you did with the wordle. Seamless writing. One wouldn’t have known it was a wordle. So very touching!

Thanks Mary! Wordles can be quite tricky.
